  • Jessie Eason joins the Challenger Learning Center as the marketing manager on January 2nd
  • Tallahassee Astronomical Society holds monthly meeting on January 15th at 7pm
  • January 18th: Last day to see “The Polar Express: The IMAX Experience”
  • January 19th: “Wild Safari” opens in the IMAX Theatre
  • On January 29th, the Challenger Learning Center in conjunction with Tallahassee Community College and the Gadsden County School District announced that the Freuauff Foundation will sponsor all sixth-grade students in Gadsden County to participate in the Challenger Learning Center’s Ultimate Classroom Experience.

February

  • On February 12th, the Challenger Learning Center hosted the Board of Directors meeting of Space Florida.
  • On February 24th, the Challenger Learning Center participated in the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (Mag Lab) Open House.
  • The College of Engineering’s 12th Annual Industry Day was held on February 27th & 28th.
  • Florida State University announced on February 21st that the university has been chosen as the site of the new Florida Center for Research in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The nationally unique state-university partnership, led by Nobel Laureate Sir Harold Kroto, will use an interdisciplinary, evidence-based approach to improve mathematics and science teaching and learning in Florida's schools.

March

  • March 2nd: “Sharks” opens in the IMAX Theatre
  • On March 6th, the Challenger Learning Center participated in the City of Tallahassee Legislative Reception at the Capital Rotunda.
  • On March 6th, Microsoft launched their NEW Operating System VISTA, Office 2007, and Exchange Server 2007 to leaders in the local tech industry at the Challenger Learning Center. They held workshops and seminars throughout the day in the IMAX Theatre and Planetarium.
  • On March 9th, the Challenger Learning Center hosted the future professional engineers’ of Florida Department of Transportation and gave them a tour of the facility.
  • On March 15th, Michelle Personette, Director, was nominated for “Women Who Make Magic” award sponsored by Magic 107.1.
  • On March 19th the Tallahassee Astronomical Society Meeting was held in Classroom B at the Challenger Learning Center.
  • On March 20th and 21st, the Challenger Learning Center hosted representatives for the aerospace industry and Space Florida to celebrate Florida Space Day.
  • On March 22nd the Challenger Learning Center participated in FSU Day at the Capital.
  • On March 30th, Sen. Barack Obama, Democratic Presidential Candidate rented the Challenger Learning Center to host a campaign fundraiser.
  • Susan Borland and Kathy Safford-Osborne, our Education Managers went to Houston, Texas to rewrite the space mission scenario curriculum for the “Voyage to the Moon.” Both Kathy Safford-Osborne and Susan Borland were selected by Challenger Center for Space Science Education to rewrite the storyboard, curriculum, and experiments for the “Moon” scenario.

April

  • The Challenger Learning Center launched a new promotion “Take a Bite Out of Your Work Day”, the special began on April 1st and will end June 30th. For $10 you can see one of the three following films: “Sharks”, “Wild Safari” or “Roving Mars” and get a hot dog, chips and soda. The promotion is only valid Monday-Thursday (11am – 2pm). This promotion offers people an alternative for their lunch breaks.
  • On Saturday, April 1st, the Challenger Learning Center had a booth at Springtime Tallahassee’s Kids Park.
  • On April 14th, the Challenger Learning Center participated in the Mary Brogan Museum of Art Science Annual Wine Festival.
  • National Astronomy Day was celebrated at the Challenger Learning Center with free planetarium shows and solar viewings.
  • On April 21st, the Challenger Learning Center participated in Kids Fest at the North Florida Fairgrounds.
  • The College of Engineering celebrated its 25th Anniversary on April 23rd.
  • The Challenger Learning Center hosted Engineering Family & Fun Night. Family and Friends of the Faculty & Staff of the College of Engineering saw a viewing of the IMAX film “Wild Safari”.
  • The Challenger Learning participated in Camp-Woe-Be-Gone on April 28th. Camp-Woe-Be-Gone is the exploration of grief and space for children that have experienced the loss of a significant other. Challenger Learning Center sponsors in this program annually with the Caring Tree of Big Bend Hospice.

May

  • The Challenger Learning Center celebrated National Space Day on May 4th.
  • May 4th: “300” opens in the IMAX Theatre.
  • The Challenger Learning Center has a presence at the Tallahassee Regional Airport. A 10’ x 10’ graphic display promoting space exploration and the Challenger Learning Center’s mission statement is on display from May 9th – June 19th.
  • On May 12th, the Challenger Learning Center hosted Leon County’s Elementary Education Expo. Students from across the district displayed their winning science fair projects.
  • The Challenger Learning Center participated in “Get Out & See Tallahassee” on May 12th. In honor of National Tourism Week, the Tallahassee Area Convention & Visitors Bureau hosted this event. The program will take place throughout the day Saturday, May 12, 2007 and consists of area attractions, parks and museums opening their doors for free to the local community.
  • Congratulations to Flightline Group, Inc. on 25 years of success. Flightline Group, Inc. celebrated their 25th Anniversary on May 18th.
  • On May 19th, the Challenger Learning Center participated in AirFest at the Tallahassee Regional Airport.
  • May 24th is the last day of school for students in Leon County.
  • The administrative offices of the Challenger Learning Center are closed in observance of Memorial Day, however both theatres will be open.
  • May 29th is the last day of school for teachers in Leon County.
  • May 30th & 31st: 40 upper elementary and pre-service teachers from Leon, Jefferson, Gadsden and Wakulla counties attend a two-day summer institute. The training consists of two recognized and award winning programs: Challenger Center for Space Science Education’s Cosmic EdVentures & the interagency program funded by NASA and NSF, GLOBE.

  • Critter Camp Summer Camp: (June 4 – 8) Explore critters of all shapes and sizes, from the microscopic to the massive. The critters of air, land and sea will be studied and observed in this GRRReat camp!
  • Astronaut Academy Summer Camp: (July 11 – 15) "Space Station this is Mission Control, we are ready for our mission!" Your child will apply for the job they want aboard the mission, design their own mission patch, and conduct their own experiments when they fly their very own space mission. THIS CAMP IS FULL!
  • Wacky Weather Summer Camp: (June 18 – 22) Your little meteorologist will make weather instruments, study cloud cover, temperature and air pressure. Your child will create their own tornado, learn to track a thunderstorm and learn what makes a rainbow.
  • Moon, Mars & Beyond Summer Camp: (June 25 – 29) This camp is "out of this world"! Your child could be part of our return to the Moon or the first manned mission to Mars, but long before they lift off, they'll need to learn about the unique challenges they'll face. Your child will have the opportunity to investigate and create what it will take to colonize the Moon and Mars.
  • The Challenger Learning Center presence at the Tallahassee Regional Airport ends on June 19th.

  • Astronaut Academy Summer Camp: (July 16 – 20) "Space Station this is Mission Control, we are ready for our mission!" Your child will apply for the job they want aboard the mission, design their own mission patch, and conduct their own experiments when they fly their very own space mission.
  • Wacky Weather Summer Camp: (July 23 – 27) Your little meteorologist will make weather instruments, study cloud cover, temperature and air pressure. Your child will create their own tornado, learn to track a thunderstorm and learn what makes a rainbow.

  • October 1, 2007: Hurricane on the Bayou Receives Four Giant Screen Cinema Awards The 2007 Giant Screen Cinema Association Achievement Awards were presented at the GSCA International Conference and Trade Show in Vancouver, BC, Canada, on September 25, 2007. The MacGillivray Freeman Film Hurricane on the Bayou, now playing at the Challenger Learning Center IMAX Theatre, took home four awards including the prestigious Best Film Produced Exclusively for Giant Screen Theaters. Other awards received included: Best Sound, Best Film for Lifelong Learning and Best Film Launch by a Distributor.

  • December 1st: Learning the Night Sky Free Planetarium Show kicks off a partnership with the Tallahassee Astnonomical Society for a monthly free show about our universe.
  • December 31st: Capital City Countdown: Party on the Plaza
